The artist

“The world appears simultaneously observed and invented.”

Berk joined the emotional freedom of Abstract Expressionism with recognizable hills, figures, interiors and flowers. She exhibited at the Oakland Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the de Young in the 1960s, often signing “H. Berk” to sidestep prejudice against women painters.
